Sophia Christensen, 90, of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge.
She was born November 2, 1929 in Parkersburg, Iowa, the daughter of George and Dena (Dirksen) Johnson. She graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended Wartburg College. She worked as a school teacher, teaching for a year in country school. Sophia was united in marriage to Harold L. Christensen on July 31, 1949, the couple made their home in Humboldt on a farm west of town. In 1962 she started a cake baking and decorating business where she crafted her trade for over 25 years. In 1988 the couple moved off the farm and into town. She was active at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, enjoyed her family and grandchildren and was known for her cinnamon rolls.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Jean (Gary) Woodward of Humboldt, Janet (Mike) Matson of Rochester, Minnesota, Sandy (Dick) Collins of Humboldt and Roger (Linda) Christensen of Bellevue, Nebraska, eleven grandchildren, Renee, Doug, Janelle, Cheryl, Teresa, Geoff, Zack, Elijah, Clayton, Alexis and Dustin, two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Noah and her sister-in-law Roselyn Christiansen of Humboldt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16th at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17th at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery.
