Sumner B. Oppedahl, 78, of Humboldt, formerly of Goldfield, passed away December 11, 2011 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lake Lutheran Church near Renwick. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday (today) at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Sumner Byro Oppedahl, the son of Andrew G. and Stella (Byro) Oppedahl, was born February 16, 1933 on the family farm between Goldfield and Renwick. Sumner attended country schools and graduated from Renwick High School in 1951. Following his education, he enlisted into the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Sumner was honorably discharged and returned home to take over the families farming operations.
Sumner was united in marriage to Arda Deppe in 1958 and the couple made their home on the Oppedahl family farm. In addition to farming, he enjoyed his work at Silver Creek Ski Lodge for many years. In 1994, Sumner retired from farming and was then employed by the city of Clarion for 13 years.
Mr. Oppedahl was a member of the Lake Lutheran Church. He took a great interest in conservation and was an active member of the Isaak Walton League. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Iowa Bowling Association, and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed puzzles, bowling, golfing, flying his airplane, and camping.
Mr. Oppedahl is survived by his wife, Arda Oppedahl of Humboldt; daughters, Celes (Ulysses) Allen of Plano, TX, Cindy (Mark) VanHaaaften of Otley, IA, and Billie (Fred) Weers of Badger; son, Todd Oppedahl of Humboldt; special niece, Sandi (Doug) Gangstead and their children, Dustin and Denae; grandchildren, Abby, Megan, and Peyton; brother, Andy (Carolyn) Oppedahl of Dubuque; and sister, Averill (Eldon) Monson of Livermore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Stella Oppedahl; and sister, Marguerite Olson.
