Verna Freis, 94, of Humboldt, passed away May 30, 2008 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Freis is survived by her son, Daryl Freis of Humboldt; daughter, Jayne Eisenbarth of Livermore; grandchildren, Tim Eisenbarth of Columbus, MO, Todd (Caroline) Eisenbarth of Barrington, IL, and Tanya (Brian) Pflibsen of Humboldt; and great grandchildren, Alyssa and Tyler Pflibsen, and Leah and Logan Eisenbarth. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; son, Gary; and brothers, Harold, Merlin, and Earl Lockwood.
Verna Lockwood, the daughter of Charles and Katherine Lockwood, was born January 31, 1914 at Waterloo, Iowa. As a child, she made her home in various places with her family while her father served in the Navy and received her education at Hardy. She was united in marriage to Henry Freis on December 3, 1937 and the couple made their home in Humboldt. Verna served the Humboldt Community School district as a cook in Taft Elementary fro 16 years. She was also employed in area homes helping with housework and helped her husband with the care and maintenance of Union Cemetery in Humboldt for many years. Mr. Freis passed away in April of 1990 and Verna continued to maintain the home he had built for her in Humboldt until her death.
Verna was a long-time member of the Senior Citizens Center in Humboldt. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, fishing, crocheting, and occasional trips to Tama.
