Verna L. Nilles

Verna L. Nilles, 91, of Humboldt, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025 in the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 2, 1934, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Robert and Blanche (Stevenson) Wittman. She grew up in Humboldt and attended Humboldt Schools. She was united in marriage to John N. “Jack” Nilles on September 10, 1951 in Humboldt. The couple made their home for a few years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the late 1950’s they returned to the family farm in Iowa. The couple moved to Humboldt in 2004. Verna was a very hard worker, providing for her family and keeping them fed. She loved to quilt and was known for the produce they provided at the farmers market in Humboldt.

He is survived by her children; Polly Nilles, Pat (Mark) Laing and Doug Nilles all of Humboldt, her grandchildren Candy, Mike, Bob (Wendy), Stacy (Joe), Candi, Nick (Amber) and Megan (Dylan), twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, her sisters-in-law; Joan Wittman of St. Paul, Minnesota, Mary Buckner of Branson, Missouri, Barb Sawyer of Humboldt, Clarine (Frank) Abeita of Los Lunas, New Mexico and Eva (Jack) Cafferty of Mauston, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, son Tom, her brother Wayne and her sisters Jean and Bobbie.

A Memorial Gathering for Verna and her husband Jack will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8th at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt. www.masonlindhart.com
