Vernon L. “Vern” Abbas, 75 of Humboldt, passed away on Saturday morning, October 23, 2021 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born November 16, 1945 in Algona, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Aletha (Moreland) Abbas. He grew up and attended school in Algona, Iowa, graduating from Algona High School. Vern enlisted and served in the United States Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa and worked for Oscar Meyer in the Meat Packing Industry. On March 26, 1995 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Nelson. The couple made their home in Humboldt. He enjoyed card games and liked to cook and travel.
Vern is survived by his wife Bonnie of Humboldt, daughter Twila (Gregg) Carlson of Madrid, his granddaughter Madison Carlson and great-grandson A.J., brother Gary Abbas, step-brother Mike Estberg, step-sister Jan Uhlenhopp, his step-children Brenda (Tom) Mersch of Humboldt, Brian (Lisa) Nelson of Dakota City and Connie (Reed) Dowling of Des Moines, twelve step-grandchildren and eighteen step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin Abbas and Aletha Bostwick and his sister Jeanette Rash.
Graveside services with military rites by the Sathers-Odgaard American Legion will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30th at Union Cemetery in Humboldt.
