Virgil C. Carman, Jr, age 80, died September 12, 2019, surrounded by family, in Humboldt, Iowa following a heroic battle with cancer.

Virgil was born to Virgil Sr. and Cecilia (Hronek) Carman on February 23, 1939 in Pocahontas County. He graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1957. In June 1960, he married Mary Ann Himrod and together, they raised four children, Jean, Dick, Sandra and Kenny. He farmed near Pioneer, Iowa for 28 years, then continued working at Chantland Manufacturing until his retirement in 2005. During his high school days, Virgil was involved with sports and excelled in football, making 1st team all-conference and co-captain during his junior & senior years. Virgil was an avid outdoorsman & enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends & family. He also enjoyed watching his children & grandchildren in all their school activities and athletic events. He cheered for Iowa State sports and loved going to Iowa State Cyclone football games.
Virgil enjoyed the tempo of classic country music and loved to dance with Mary Ann in earlier years. Later years, he found interest in his family genealogy and kept detailed records & photos of his ancestors and descendants.

Virgil is preceded in death by his father, Virgil Sr., his mother, Cecilia, his sister, Jeane, brothers-in-law, Stan Troxel, Bill Ahart, Arvin Christensen & Ralph Himrod and sister-in-law, Sharon Himrod.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann, his daughter, Jean (Larry) Massey; his son Richard (Kathy) Carman; his daughter Sandra (Tom) Wiertzema; his son Kenneth Carman and his significant other Joni Ohnemus; his grandchildren Chelsey (Matt) Thilges, Nick (Abby) Carman, Garret Carman, Shelby Weirtzema & Lance (Stephanie) Massey; 3 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Melaney & Mason Thilges; his brothers, Gerald (Marcia), Eugene (Judy) and Dale (Donna), his sisters, Doris Troxel, Dorothy Christensen & sister-in-law, Mary Himrod and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, Iowa on Monday, September 16, 2019 from 4:00pm – 7:00pm.
A memorial service will be held at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, Iowa on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 11:00am, with burial to follow at Union Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Unity Point Hospice.
A special thanks to Unity Point Hospice for all the wonderful care and support, both the team that cared for him at home and the staff at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
