Virgil A. Nelson, 77, of Dakota City, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 following a lengthy illness.
Virgil was born April 11, 1942 in Callendar, Iowa, the youngest of seven children to Phillip and Florence (Swanson) Nelson. The family moved to Humboldt in 1950 where he graduated from Humboldt High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Jean Ulrich in 1963 and they raised three children, Denise, Neal and Noelle. The couple later divorced and on December 22, 1990 he married Barbara Richtsmeier. The couple made their home in Dakota City and Virgil worked for a number of years at Gunder Manufacturing. He and Barbara loved to travel, taking an annual fishing trip to Canada each spring and then spending time at during the winter at South Padre, Texas. Virgil was an avid car lover and spent many hours restoring his classic cars while listening to his favorite 50’s and 60’s music.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Dakota City, his children, Denise (Dennis) Gonzales of San Antonio, Texas, Neal Nelson of Humboldt, his step-daughters, Lori and Lisa, four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, his brother, Erland (Phyllis) Nelson and two sisters, Selma Ehrhardt and Phyllis (Carroll) Vik. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Noelle, his brothers, Cliff and Frank and his sister, Dorothy and granddaughter, Kayla.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held later in the fall.
