Virginia Irene (Wood) Sorensen, 96, of Humboldt, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 18, 1923 in North Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of William Justin and Irene Rose (Theebald) Houston. She grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin and in 1939, married Darrell Winkey. The couple made their home in Shell Rock, Iowa, where they raised their three children. They later divorced and on December 7, 1965, Virginia married Jack Wood. The couple owned and operated the Dixie Crème Donut Shop in Humboldt. Their passion was to travel on their Honda Gold Wing motorcycle in which they logged more than 300,000 miles across the United States, Alaska and Canada. They also enjoyed building miniatures. Following Jack’s death, Virginia married Alise Sorensen on December 4, 2004. The couple made their home in Humboldt, where they maintained a full social calendar, meeting friends, eating out, excersing and traveling when they could. She had many occupations throughout her life, donut shop owner, salesperson for the Fashionette Women’s Clothing Store, manager for the Phillips 66 convenience and gas station, but none more important than that of wife and mother. Virginia had many life-long friends. She loved her children and grandchildren and her family loved her dearly.
She is survived by her husband of 14 years, Al of Humboldt, her children, Mavis Schambach of Boiling Springs, Colorado and Terry Winkey of Cedar Falls, three grandchildren, Shelli (Dave) Cannon-DeKreek, Nick Winkey and Kendra Condrey, 9 great-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 5 step-children.
Visitation will be from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. with a Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6th at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock.
