Dr. Wilferd W. Wortman, 97, of Friendship Haven, passed away October 1, 2015. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt with full military rites by the Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 119. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Dr. Wortman is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Ron) Reher of Humboldt; grandchildren, Tina (Tim) Clarken of Badger and Brent Reher of Humboldt; great grandchildren, Cooper and Gavin Clarken and Montgomery and Dakota Reher; his brother, Willard (Gerry) Wortman of Wichita, KS; and his companion of 10 years, Christina Mayer of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Winona Schlich.
Wilferd Wallace Wortman, the son of George and Elma Wortman, was born October 11, 1917 at Chrisfield, Kansas. He was raised and educated at Harper, Kansas and graduated from Harper High School. He attended the University of Kansas receiving his Bachelors Degree. He enlisted into the United States Army serving as a flight instructor with the Army Air Corps, training pilots known as 90-Day Wonders during World War II. While stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska, Wilferd met Marcia Tyner at the USO and the couple was united in marriage on October 11, 1947. They made their home at Denver, CO where Wilferd worked as a pilot for Continental Airlines. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Denver and began teaching at the college level in Omaha, NE, Sioux Falls, SD, and Flint, MI. He received his PhD from Michigan State University and served as a Professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney until his retirement. In his retirement, Wilferd made his home at Denver, Co where he continued to teach part-time.
