William “Bill” Dean Sundell, 70, of Humboldt, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
William “Bill” Dean Sundell was born January 19, 1941 in Jefferson, Iowa and grew up in the Boxholm, Iowa area, the home of the Swedes. He was one of four children. He graduated from Grand Community High School in 1959 and then attended Iowa State University graduating in 1964. While at ISU, he was a member of the Army ROTC and following his graduation; he served 2 years in Germany. Following his honorable discharge from active duty he served 5 years in the Army Reserve at Garner, Iowa. His early career consisted of working with the ISU Extension Service and some work in sales. For 20 years, Bill worked at Dodgen Industries in Humboldt. Bill and his wife Janene were married in 1968 and made their home in Humboldt where they were members of the Faith United Methodist Church.
Early volunteer work consisted of church and school committees, coaching youth basketball, soccer, and flag football, but his real love was for the game of baseball. Bill was involved with the Humboldt-Dakota City Youth Baseball Program for 18 years as a coach. There were several years where he coached or helped coach 2 teams each summer. He coached the Humboldt Class of 1999, “The Travel Team” as the boys called themselves, from 3rd to 8th grade through many tournaments, which he enjoyed very much.
Bill served on several community organizations including Taft Parent Council, Humboldt-Dakota City Youth Sports Board, Northwest Iowa Teener League Board, Humboldt Athletic Booster Board, Humboldt County Ducks Unlimited Committee, the Humboldt Park Board, and in the development of the Humboldt Family Aquatic Center.
He was a long time member of 4-H and loved animals, especially working with horses in his earlier years and later with black Labrador Retriever dogs.
Bill is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janene; his sister, Donna (Bob) Stark of Fort Dodge; brother-in-law, Jim (Diana) Weddell of Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cloyd and Emma Sundell; his son, Ryan; brother, Cloyd Sundell, Jr.; and his sister, Gwen Scheetz.
